The Avengers: Age of Ultron did very well this summer, but it got blown out the door by Jurassic World. The Fantastic Four reboot did terribly. Batman Vs Superman looks ridiculous. Is the time at hand for superhero movies?
There had to be a point where the market was going to get oversaturated with superhero movies, and we may be at that point right now. Then again, Age of Ultron still made a ton of money, we knew it wouldn’t make as much as the first one, and Deadpool and X-Men Apocalypse should be hits next year, even if the genre has to suffer the occasional flop here and there.
So while no one can predict the future, the question is do superhero movies have a future, or is the genre in trouble? It’s not totally certain right now, the genre had to cool down at some point, but it’s surprising that the Fantastic Four flopped in the sense that most superhero movies at this point do very well, whether they’re great or just okay.
If Batman Vs Superman is as ridiculous as it looks, could it be a major torpedo hit to the genre that could sink it all for good? We’ll find out next year for sure, but again, X-Men Apocalypse, Deadpool, and the long awaited big screen adaptation of Doctor Strange should still hold a lot of promise.
